Google DeepMind leadership — who runs what, as of 2026-08-05

Intermediate

Development line: organization:google-deepmind · thread leadership Last researched: 2026-09-02 · confidence: high · 11 sources, each with the moment it was read Freshness check: 2026-09-03 · no substantive leadership change since this article; one stale-source caveat added

What it is

A leadership and talent reorganisation, not a model or API release. On 2026-08-05 Demis Hassabis moved from Google DeepMind CEO to Chair and Alphabet Chief Scientist, and Koray Kavukcuoglu became the SVP responsible for Gemini models, frontier research, the Gemini app and the developer teams. Google also announced that Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat were creating an independent public benefit corporation, later identified as Discovery Loop. The announcement introduced no endpoint, model id, pricing, availability or migration change.

What changed

Google's 2023 structure named Demis Hassabis CEO of Google DeepMind and Jeff Dean Google's Chief Scientist for Google Research and Google DeepMind; immediately before this change Koray Kavukcuoglu was Google DeepMind CTO and Google's Chief AI Architect. On 2026-08-05 Demis relinquished day-to-day operations for strategic, scientific and advisory duties; Koray became the operational leader as SVP reporting to Sundar Pichai; Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat launched a separate venture, whose founders Discovery Loop later named as Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals. Google named no replacement Google DeepMind CEO.

How to use this

  1. Update ownership maps and briefing material: treat Koray Kavukcuoglu as the day-to-day Google DeepMind leader for Gemini models, frontier research, the Gemini app and developer teams; keep Demis Hassabis as Chair, Alphabet Chief Scientist and adviser. — The next chapter of our AI momentum
  2. Do not alter production Gemini integrations because of this personnel change. Check the Gemini API release notes for concrete model, SDK, schema, pricing or availability changes before acting. — Gemini API release notes
  3. Before selecting or retaining a Gemini model, check the deprecation table for shutdown dates and recommended replacements; that is the actionable migration source. — Gemini deprecations
  4. To pursue work at Jeff Dean's new organisation, use Discovery Loop's official application route. The observed opening was a full-time, on-site Member of Technical Staff role in Palo Alto spanning several research and engineering areas. — Member of Technical Staff @ Discovery Loop

Best practices

  • Prefer dated leadership announcements over undated biographies. As observed on 2026-09-02, Google DeepMind's careers page still described Demis Hassabis as CEO and was therefore stale; on 2026-09-03 the undated About page showed the same lag. Treat both as non-authoritative for current titles. — Careers at Google DeepMind · About Google DeepMind
  • Use Google's stated title for Koray — SVP, Google DeepMind and Chief AI Architect, Google — rather than calling him CEO unless Google later announces that title. — Koray Kavukcuoglu
  • Treat Discovery Loop as an early-stage organisation building and first using automated experimental-loop systems internally, not as an available API or customer product until official access terms appear. — Discovery Loop — Continuous Exploration

Superseded by this

  • 2023-04-20 Google guidance naming Demis Hassabis as CEO of Google DeepMind.
  • 2023-04-20 Google guidance naming Jeff Dean as Google's Chief Scientist serving Google Research and Google DeepMind.
  • Pre-2026-08-05 references treating Koray Kavukcuoglu's current Google DeepMind title as CTO.
  • Undated Google DeepMind careers copy still labelling Demis Hassabis as CEO, observed stale on 2026-09-02.

Still unknown

  • Whether or when Google will appoint another Google DeepMind CEO; Koray's announced title is SVP.
  • The HR-effective dates of the individual role changes; 2026-08-05 is the announcement date.
  • Any model, API, pricing, SLA or roadmap effect — none was attributed to the reorganisation.
  • Discovery Loop's public API, customer-access programme, pricing or availability date — none announced.
  • Google's own pages were not reconciled as of 2026-09-03: the careers and About pages still called Demis CEO, and Jeff Dean's author page still called him Google's Chief Scientist.
  • No official Simplified-Chinese version of the announcement was found; a Caixin report corroborated the core role changes.
